WP-5
The West Papillion Retention Basin 5 Project (WP-5) is one of 15 proposed regional detention basins in the Papillion Creek Watershed Management Plan [insert link]. WP-5, a 133 acre lake, will be located in Sarpy County near 126th and Cornhusker Road. This project will address the immediate need for flood control in areas surrounding and including the City of Papillion. WP-5 will also:
- Protect stream banks from further deterioration
- Improve water quality in the Papillion Creek Watershed
- Introduce an aquatic ecosystem including fisheries
- Create and enhance wildlife habitat.
- Provide recreational benefits to the community.
The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District (P-MRNRD) completed a Preliminary Design for WP-5 in 2009. Various construction alternatives for WP-5 were evaluated during the preliminary design process. Public input was obtained through a series of public workshops and watershed workgroups. This input was used to develop two key planning documents:
- Land Use Plan – This Plan provides a 20 to 30 year framework for development of the surrounding area and includes potential land uses, a transportation network, trails and recreation. The Plan is based on public interests, projected population growth and market conditions.
- Community-Based Watershed Plan – This Plan was developed for the WP-5 lake and surrounding area and includes environmental issues, water quality and watershed management strategies. Four fundamental elements were incorporated into the Plan: Economic, Social, Physical, and Natural Environments.
Because of the flood reduction benefits it will provide to the City of Papillion and surrounding area, WP-5 was placed at the top of the Papillion Creek Watershed Management Plan project priority list, for 2010 to 2013 implementation.
Schedule
Preliminary design was completed in late 2009 and final design began in early 2010. Construction is slated to begin in late 2010.
